If you’ve ever wanted to visit the Far East on the cheap, now might be your time.

The Northland Regional Chamber of Commerce is offering its members an opportunity to spend more than a week traveling throughout China for fewer than $1,900 per traveler.

An informational meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, at the chamber offices for those interested. The trip runs from Oct. 22 to Oct. 30.

Sheila Tracy, chamber president, said not to expect a business-trip atmosphere just because it’s hosted by the chamber.

“It won’t have a business-heavy focus,” she said. “It’s more of a tourist kind of trip and it is an incredible price.”

The $1,899 price includes stays at four- and five-star hotels, roundtrip airfare from Los Angeles International Airport, three meals per day, among other savings. Travelers will visit a handful of cities throughout the trip, including Beijing and Shanghai. Sightseeing opportunities and side-tour possibilities include stops at the Great Wall, Ming Tombs and Tiananmen Square.

Tracy said the cost coupled with the company were the trip’s selling points.

“I feel like the key is it’s an adventure for a good cost,” Tracy said, “and getting to do it with people around you from the same area gives you a totally different perspective going into it.”

Louise Welborn, leadership chair at the chamber, said her husband, Charles, has been wanting to vacation in China, but travel packages were generally in the $4,000 to $5,000 range. The opportunity through the chamber was too good to pass up, she said.

“(Charles) has been checking out prices for some time and this cost was unbelievable,” she said.

Citslinc is offering the travel package to chamber members, Tracy said. Citslinc has 30 years of experience in sending Americans to China and company officials will be on hand at the May 26 meeting to answer any questions.

Tracy said the chamber will use its percentage of the sales for the trip to build its reserves that were reduced when the office was renovated last year.

She said 20 members were already on board and the chamber goal was for 100 members for the trip.

Thelma Crawford, business development chair at the chamber, said the low cost played a major role in her signing up for the tour along with her husband.

“It wasn’t really on my radar screen, but the cost and the tour aspect really attracted me,” Crawford said.
