A check for $78,175 from Liberty school district taxpayers could already be in the bank account of the Public School Retirement System of Missouri.
According to Superintendent Mike Brewer, a check was cut Friday, June 15, and sent by certified mail to PSRS to settle a dispute over retirement contributions the school district failed to pay for former superintendent Scott Taveau. The school board voted unanimously at a special meeting June 6 to pay the amount, which covers retirement contributions and interest during an 18-month period Taveau reportedly collected retirement benefits he was not entitled to receive. The school district has spent at least $230,000 in legal fees to defend itself in the case. Cole County Circuit Judge Patricia S. Joyce also ordered Taveau to pay PSRS $245,000 in retirement benefits and interest, but Taveau is appealing that ruling. Meanwhile, PSRS is withholding his retirement payments. Taveau, who has pleaded innocent, also faces criminal charges in Clay County for stealing by deceit and attempted stealing by deceit. A state audit focusing on the district’s financial management practices is still expected to be released later this month.
