Liberty senior citizens, 60 years of age or older, may receive relief from the summer heat at the Liberty Silver Center, 1600 S. Withers Road.
Temperatures have been in the upper 90s this week, and the Kansas City area has been under an Ozone Alert. "The heat and humidity can be tough on all of us, but particularly on our seniors," said LeAnn Lawlor, aging services coordinator. "We want them to know the center is available to them for respite." The elderly and frail are more susceptible to heat exposure and with summer in full swing, the possibility of heat stroke is ever present. Being aware of heat stroke can save your life. Some symptoms are: heavy sweating, pale or clammy skin, fainting and vomiting. A heat stroke is a true medical emergency. A delay in treatment can be fatal, she said. The Silver Center also serves lunch. Reservations are required 24 hours in advance by calling 439-4368. A $1.50 donation for the meal is accepted. The center is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Liberty Access Bus, which provides transportation, is available for use to and from the Silver Center. For more information about scheduling and applicable fees, call 439-4397. All area residents who need a break from the heat can relax in the coolness of the Community Center lobby. Use of any fitness and aquatic facilities still require the purchase of a membership or day pass. The Community Center is open 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday; 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday; 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday; and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday
