When the economy hands you a lemon, make lemon soufflé. That’s just what Sherry Brummett and her husband, Rick, did about their dream to open the Tuscan Ballroom for weddings and other special occasions. With developers having trouble getting financing to construct new buildings, the Brummetts looked for another opportunity and found it at Liberty Hills Country Club. A ribbon cutting, sponsored by the Liberty Area Chamber of Commerce, is planned for 4 p.m. Thursday, July 9, at the ballroom, 19808 Missouri Route H. After their original plans fell through, Sherry said they started looking for existing buildings where they could open their event planning and catering business. “The space is perfect for us,” she said. “Rick and I can remember driving past the country club last summer and saying to each other, ‘now that would be a fantastic place for the Tuscan Ballroom.’” John Ferguson, one of the owners of the country club, was also looking for some one to provide catering for golfing and other events and for a way to draw more business to their facility east of Liberty. “Right now we’re both very pleased,” Sherry said. Ferguson agreed. “They’ve done a beautiful job, and the food is good,” Ferguson said. “I’m excited for them and for us, too. For our members nothing has changed, we’re still a private club.” Ferguson said his ultimate goal was to build a new building for the club and for the Brummetts to take over use of the existing building. “There’s plenty of parking and a great view,” Ferguson said. “And they’d like to build a chapel.” Sherry said the tranquil country setting is great for weddings or other special gatherings. Since opening in April, they have hosted 22 events, including several weddings and Mother’s Day and Father’s Day brunches. “In two months we have renovated the third floor, adding a beautiful office and bridal dressing room suite. We have changed out the artwork and added new chairs to the ballroom. It’s beautiful,” she said. “Next on the list is a new canopy over the main entrance and the windows outside, just in time for our ribbon-cutting ceremony.” There is also an area in the basement where the groom and his attendants can relax and even play a round of golf if they so choose, she said. Meanwhile, Sherry said they planned to grow their business and get themselves better know in the Northland. She said the country club site offered lots of room for expansion and creativity.
