Tara Garrison, an Oklahoma Baptist University senior from Liberty, received the Dr. Wilbur C. Lewis Scholarship during an OBU School of Nursing banquet on April 27. Dr. Lana Bolhouse, dean of the School of Nursing, presented the award. The award is an annual scholarship given to a university student preparing for a health-related occupation that is committed to missions service. The scholarship is made possible through a fund established by Gladys Lewis and friends in honor of Dr. Wilbur C. Lewis, a 1952 graduate of the university who served as a surgeon and as a medical missionary. The university’s School of Nursing is a baccalaureate program for the preparation of a professional nurse. The nursing faculty view nursing as a Christian ministry and as a professional practice. During nursing courses students learn to provide quality nursing care through competent practice. Upon completion of the program, the graduate is qualified to take the national examination for licensure as a registered nurse in a state of choice.
The University of Wyoming listed Liberty student, Max Adam Curnow, among those included on the 2009 spring semester academic dean’s and freshman honor roll. The honor roll consists of regularly enrolled undergraduates above freshman standing who earn a 3.4 or better grade-point average, and freshman who have earned a 3.25 or better grade-point average. To be eligible, students must have been enrolled for a minimum of 12 credit hours taken for letter grades.
Travis David Walker is one of 235 medical students who received the Doctor of Osteopathic medicine degree from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences in commencement ceremonies May 16 in Kansas City. Walker is the son of Sherry and David Walker of Kansas City. He is a 2001 graduate of Liberty High School and he earned a bachelor of arts in biology in 2005 from Saint Louis University. He is a member of Psi Sigma Alpha, the national osteopathic scholastic honor society. Walker also served as a KCUMB ambassador. He will complete postdoctoral training in otolaryngology and facial plastic surgery at Freeman Health System in Joplin.
Brittni L'Rae Coursey of Liberty recently received a bachelor's degree in news and information during Oklahoma Baptist University's 2009 spring commencement in the university's Raley Chapel. Coursey was among 254 graduates recognized at university’s ceremony. She graduated with the scholastic predicate cum laude for maintaining at least a 3.40 grade-point average.
William Jewell College recently named the Cardinal Scholar Athletes for the spring semester. To qualify for this honor, students must maintain a 3.0 grade-point average. Cardinal Scholars from Liberty along with their majors and sport included: Tom Farinacci, business marketing, football; Kathleen Hatfield, physical education with recreation and sport and Spanish, soccer; Kyle Henry, psychology, soccer; Erik Honig, international relations, football; Chad Kirkland, business banking and finance, tennis; Marcus Mallams, business administration, soccer; Mike Neuenswander, science and technology management with an emphasis in physics, basketball; Abigail Pratt, biology, tennis; Stacy Reichel, science and technology, cross country and spirit team; James Trotter, business administration, golf; and Anna Wright, political science and psychology, spirit team. Cardinal Scholar Athlete of Pleasant Valley, Mark Stevenson, business marketing, track and field.
Approximately 608 candidates received degrees from Missouri University of Science and Technology, formerly the University of Missouri-Rolla, during commencement ceremonies May 16 in the Gale Bullman Multi-Purpose Building on campus. Graduates from Liberty receiving a bachelor’s degree included Brett Michael Agee, civil engineering, magna cum laude and Joshua Michael Buehrer, mechanical engineering. Ronald Eric Gallagher of Liberty received his Doctorate of Philosophy in geological engineering.
Missouri University of Science and Technology, formerly the University of Missouri-Rolla, has announced the names of students who made the honor list for the 2009 spring semester. Those on the list carried a minimum of 12 hours and had grade-point averages of 3.2 or above out of a possible 4.0 Honor list students from Liberty include: Brett Michael Agee, Nicholas Andrew Angles, Robert Lee Eddy IV, Nichole Marie Hurd, Derek Scott King, Jonathan Dean Ledford, Andrew Thomas Luke, Scott Michael McDonald, Philip Shay Meeks, Caitlyn Giselle Moser, Christian Michael Pick and Kyle Addison Van Vleck.
Linn State Technical College has announced its 2009 May graduates. With more than 25 programs, Linn State Technical College is Missouri's only public two-year technical college with a statewide mission. Christopher Ryan Smith of Pleasant Valley received his Associate of Applied Science, medium/heavy truck technology degree.
Pamela A. Nelson has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Audiology by Salus University George S. Osborne College of Audiology in Elkins Park, Pa. Nelson earned a Bachelor of Science in communication disorders degree at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. She earned a Master of Science in audiology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Nelson recently joined Head & Neck Surgical Associates in Kansas City. Nelson lives in Liberty with her husband and son.
Kansas City resident Stefanie Jewell Tomlin was named to the spring 2009 dean's list for the Stillman School of Business at Seton Hall University.
The following students from Liberty graduated from Truman State University during graduation ceremonies May 9: Ryan Scott Brewer received a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology. Brewer graduated summa cum laude with an overall grade-point average of at least 3.9. Steven Andrew Lee received bachelor’s degrees in psychology and justice systems. Lee graduated summa cum laude with an overall grade-point average of at least 3.9. April Renee Kelly received a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and religion. Kelly graduated cum laude with an overall grade-point average between 3.5 to 3.74. Amanda Michelle Gray received a Bachelor of Science in sociology/anthropology.
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has named the dean’s list honor roll for the spring semester of the 2008-2009 academic year. Students from Liberty are Lindsey Marie Harder and Katherine Ann Sajevic. Both students maintained a grade-point average of 4.0.
Samantha Schoolfield, daughter of Terry Schoolfield of Liberty, has received a Red and Black Scholarship in the amount of $4,000 per year to attend the University of Central Missouri. Schoolfield is a 2009 graduate of Liberty High School, and plans to attend Central Missouri in the fall. Throughout high school, Schoolfield has been involved in book club, the school musical and Alliance. Her honors include receiving the HOPE Award.
Nicole Whitlock, daughter of Darrell and Donata Whitlock of Liberty, has received a Red and Black Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 per year to attend the University of Central Missouri. A 2009 graduate of Liberty High School, Whitlock plans to attend the university in the fall. Throughout high school, Whitlock has been involved in National Honors Society, Key Club, Winnwood Baptist Church, Blood Drive, A+ at Liberty Middle School and yearbook. Her honors include Liberty Academic Award.
Avila University announces the deans list for spring of 2009. Candidates possessed a grade-point average of at least a 3.5. The students from Liberty who were received this honor were Lisa Burks, Megan Motley and Meagan Noble.
