Katee Porter, owner of Fashion Revolution, is doing her part to stimulate the economy. Now all she needs is more customers to help her.

Porter, who formerly owned Excuses and Cradle to Crayons, upscale shops that catered to women and children, has reinvented her business model.

Although the latest trendy clothes and accessories still fill the racks, Porter has renamed her store Fashion Revolution and relocated it to a higher-traffic area between Lamar’s donuts and Walgreens along the busy Kansas Street corridor.

Ironically, Excuses, owned by someone else five years ago, started in the back half of the building Fashion Revolution now occupies.

“I feel like we’re home,” Porter said at an open house Oct. 27. “With our old name and our old location, people thought we were a day care.”

Changing the name of the business was also a way to announce to the public what products the shop sells.

“I thought it was important that people could see our name from the street and they know it’s a boutique,” Porter said.

Porter said she had been looking for new space, and the timing just worked out. A karate school had recently moved out of the building, and the owner was getting ready to put it on the market when Porter called.

“I think it was just meant to be,” she said. “We were destined to be here.”

Cheryl Gibbs, a new customer, said a friend told her about the store and since she worked in Liberty she thought she would stop by and check it out.

“The store really has cute, fashionable things but age-appropriate,” Gibbs said as she picked out some jewelry. “I think it’s cool that there’s something like this in Liberty.”

Porter, who has a knack for picking out the latest trends, said plaids and faux fur were big this year, and denim, big purses, scarves and blingy jewelry continued to be popular.

Porter said most of her customers ranged in age from early 20s to women in their 60s.

“I have a broad age of customers who like to feel and look young,” Porter said. “I know when I’m in my 60s, I plan to wear fun stuff.”

Among the name brands she carries are Juicy Couture, True Religion jeans and Genetic denim.

“Genetic’s fabrics are so soft and comfortable. They’re great for travel, and they don’t stretch out,” she said.

The store also carries children’s clothing, some shoes, gift items and stocking stuffers for Christmas. She said she planned to expand hours during the holidays. But most important, Porter said is to offer old-fashioned customer service.

“If someone wants to bring something in, we’ll help them accessorize it,” she said. “We’re here to serve the customers.”
