Gov. Jay Nixon has ordered that the U.S. and Missouri flags on all state buildings in Clay County be flown at half-staff from Dec. 1 to Dec. 7 to honor the bravery and sacrifice of Lance Corporal Nicholas J. Hand, age 20, of Kansas City. Lance Corporal Hand was a United States Marine who died on Nov. 22 while serving his country in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. In addition, Gov. Nixon has ordered that the U.S. and Missouri flags at state buildings in all 114 counties and the city of St. Louis be flown at half-staff for one full day today, Dec. 1. The funeral for Lance Corporal Hand was held on Monday, Nov. 30. Lance Corporal Hand was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 7, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade. His awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
