Liberty woman starts mobile business with sweet treats

Simonie Wilson has fresh-from-the-oven cupcakes and is willing to deliver them to your home or business.

BIZ_cupcakes_01cWilson, who launched 3 Girls Cupcakes in early February, bakes her cupcakes out of a commercial kitchen at Steeple Inn in Liberty, puts them in a box and brings them to your doorstep.

The family-run business is named for the three daughters in the family, Sadie, 16, Sydney, 12, and Heidi, 6. Her husband, Scott, is the general manager, and Wilson is the cupcake engineer.

The family recently purchased aBIZ_cupcakes_02c plain, white van, and as soon as she gets it “tricked out,” Wilson plans to enter it in parades and sell her cupcakes out of it at various Northland festivals and farmers markets.

“If we can get it done, we hope to be in the Snake Saturday parade in North Kansas City March 11,” she said.

Wilson said she also planned to sell her fancy cupcakes, which come in three sizes, mini, regular and jumbo, at the Historic Downtown Liberty Farmers Market when it opens for the season May 1.

She’s also looking at selling cupcakes at farmers markets in North Kansas City, Zona Rosa and Parkville.

Cupcakes are available now for weddings, baby showers, parties and other special events by calling Wilson at 813-6999 or ordering online at www.3girlscupcakes.com. She will deliver free within a 10-mile radius of Liberty. Ten percent of the proceeds go to support children’s charities or shelters.

“We want to give back to the community,” Wilson said.

Although Wilson currently works from home for a Dallas-based computer company, she wanted to start a business that involved her whole family.

“Cupcakes are so much fun and they make you smile,” Wilson said. “The girls love the cupcakes, and they have so many ideas.”

Wilson said by starting the mobile cupcake business, she was following a dream sparked by a great aunt.

“My Aunt Faye had a baking business in California, and she took me under her wing,” Wilson said. “I’ve always loved to bake for friends and family.”

In doing research, Wilson said she discovered that cupcake shops were very popular, especially in larger cities, but there were not many mobile cupcake businesses and none that she knew of in the Kansas City area.

Wilson said she offers six cupcake flavors every day including chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, strawberry and tres leches and a revolving specialty favor such as Oreo, lemon, candy bar, caramel apple and seasonal. The cupcakes can be custom decorated for different themes or celebrations. She also sells naked cupcakes (without frosting) that can be decorated at a party as part of the fun.

“I’m sort of like the ice cream man,” Wilson said. “I take cupcakes to wherever people are.”
