While growing up in small, rural Slater, my elementary teachers often taught about the injustices that blacks suffered throughout American history.

A “fair tax” proposal is pending in the Missouri Senate and recently received a hearing in the Senate Governmental Accountability Committee. In a nutshell, the Missouri Fair Tax proposal would allow Missouri residents to change our state constitution. If adopted, our state income tax would be eliminated and replaced with a statewide sales tax on retail purchases of goods and services.

The Battle of Liberty, Sept. 17, 1861, was fought three miles south of Liberty Square between 600 United States (Yankee) troops and 600 Missouri State Guard (Rebel) troops. The Guard won and crossed the Missouri River to be in the Battle of Lexington. The Union troops withdrew to William Jewell College, cared for their wounded and buried their dead. On the following day, 2,500 more Union troops were camped on the Square and in the orchard of the Lightburne House. It must have been quite a scene, some 3,000 U.S. soldiers here in Liberty to fight “the rebels.”

Show up one time, and you’re a member. Since Greater Liberty Riders started in 2003, 317 have showed up early on a Saturday morning year-round at Biscari Brothers Bicycles in Liberty. We bike to breakfast in a nearby town. As we eat and talk, I take roll. I get e-mail addresses. During the week, I send e-mail messages to all. I write stories of our rides.

The big buzz in our state Capitol has centered around the governor’s recent State of the State address.

Our governor delivered a “safe” speech — nothing controversial — and it failed to address the state of our state. So here are some facts about what Missouri faces:
