Mason sinks two free throws with 3.6 seconds remaining

It felt a lot like early March at Blue Springs High.

Liberty and Blue Springs, ranked No. 6 in the state in Class 5, went toe-to-toe in a playoff atmosphere to see who would get a leg up in the Suburban Big Seven Conference. And thanks to junior Maddie Mason's two free throws with 3.6 seconds remaining, the Blue Jays have climbed on top with a 52-51 victory Thursday, Feb. 4.

Liberty is now 15-6 overall and 7-1 in the conference with a regular-season sweep against the Wildcats, 15-3 and 6-2. Blue Springs had won six in a row after losing to Liberty on Jan. 4.

In front of a raucous crowd, the Blue Jays answered every Wildcat surge. The lead changed hands six times in the final 3 minutes, 24 seconds.

Blue Springs' Cee Cee Burris scored after a Liberty turnover with eight seconds left to put the Wildcats up by one. Liberty inbounded the ball and Mason was fouled in the backcourt.

Mason calmly sank both free throws. After a Blue Springs timeout to set up a final play, Liberty junior Kelsey Goff intercepted a Wildcats' pass near midcourt.
